The Long Island Arts Council at Freeport administers High 5 Long Island - a program providing teenagers with $5 tickets to cultural events and special youth programming, recommends artists for employment and exhibit opportunities, is active in community development, donates musical instruments to schools in underserved communities, sponsors an annual juried photography show, coordinates art classes, presents concerts and exhibits, manages an international musical composition contest, organizes craft fairs, hosts arts networking opportunities, coordinates management seminars, implements an online Culture Calendar and online listing of opportunities for artists, and more.

Attention Teenagers! If you are 13-19 years of age, join High 5 Long Island to attend cultural events throughout Long Island for only $5 per ticket. Attention Cultural Organizations! Seeking a younger audience to fill empty seats? Join High 5 Long Island and the Arts Council will help promote your events to teens. Be sure to view the Culture Calendar for a schedule of performances, exhibits, and special events presented by the Arts Council's Affiliates. The Arts Council will do its best to regularly update this calendar but it is always wise to confirm program information before attending an event.

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL MUSICAL COMPOSITION CONTEST
Supported by Sam Ash Music Stores Contest Chair: Herb Rothgarber Judges: Jay Anthony Gach and Dana Richardson
Fifty-nine entries were received from all over the world, including England, Australia, Canada, Italy, Belgium, New Zealand, and the United States. The winning composition will be performed at the Long Island Composers Alliance Music for Students program on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the Freeport Memorial Library at 2:30pm.
FIRST PRIZE: Amanda Jacobs of Rochester, NY for Garden Verses for voice and piano SECOND PRIZE: Sang Mi Ahn of Bloomington, IN for Two Pieces for violin and piano
THE ART ALCOVE EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 Freeport Recreation Center 5pm
Join the Arts Council, Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, and artist Humberto Piloto at a reception showcasing the Arts Council's new glass enclosure for The Art Alcove. This project was funded by Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg. The enclosure will ensure the safety of the artwork and provide a more accessible viewing space for the public. Be there to acknowledge Legislator Denenberg and meet Humberto Piloto.
NEW EXHIBIT SITE - SCULPTURE GARDEN
View the Mytho-Fantastical Sculpture Garden designed by artist Sheldon Aptekar at the Arts Council's NEW exhibit site in the rear lobby of the Freeport Recreation Center. The exhibit will be on display through March 31, 2010.
NEW EXHIBIT SITE – THE ART ANNEX
From April 5-30, 2010 enjoy an exhibit in The Art Annex – a new exhibit space in the Program Wing of the Freeport Recreation Center. Andrew, a student from Merrick, is organizing an exhibit for his Bar Mitzvah project. He has “always appreciated the arts and this is a perfect way to show my passion and showcase the arts.” A reception will be held on Sunday, April 11 at 11am.
