"I loved you as Joel Grey in Cabaret!"
That's what I've heard said countless times over the last ten years in reference to my performance as the master of ceremonies in Cabaret, presented by Hofstra Entertainment (formerly Hofstra USA Productions). I also co-produced that show in the summer of 1998, while coincidentally; the revival starring Alan Cumming was playing in New York City.
I had previously played the role of the 'emcee' in high school and at another theater on Long Island as well. I have dabbled a bit with George M. (Cohan), a role that Grey created on Broadway; and have also played the role of John Adams in the musical 1776, twice, a role that Joel Grey portrayed to great critical acclaim regionally. Additionally, during my early career training at the Hannah Kroner School of Dance, I recall dancing to the overture of The Grand Tour, a show that Joel Grey also starred in on Broadway.
In 2001, I premiered my critically acclaimed one man musical tribute, Courting the Jester: A Salute to Danny Kaye, at Hofstra University, which was then re-worked and presented as part of a larger event at Lincoln Center. Over the last decade I have toured the show throughout the Long Island area with great pride and enthusiasm.
Imagine my delight when I started to do some online research for my new show, Shades of Grey: A Musical Tribute to Joel Grey, and I discovered a classic television clip of another one of my favorites, Eddie Cantor, introducing Joel Grey in 1954, as “the Danny Kaye of tomorrow." Danny Kaye, Joel Grey and dare I now say myself, have all been referred to as uniquely talented showmen, each in our own generation, each of us our own ‘cast of characters’. Admittedly large shoes to fill, but a challenge that I take seriously and more importantly, one that I accept with humility and honor.
For the last several years I had been 'creatively itching and twitching' to create a tribute to Joel Grey. It seemed appropriate to present the show a few years ago to honor Joel Grey on the occasion of his 75th birthday, but alas that year came and went, and still no show. Then, within the last year, I decided to take several cues and officially set a date to create! Those cues included the fact that during 2010-2011, Hofstra University is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and for this proud Hofstra alumnus, 2010 marks my 20th anniversary working at Hofstra. Additionally, the Department of Drama and Dance will present Cabaret as part of their fall season in October of 2010. Needless to say, I took my cue, knowing the time was now!
I also discovered another somewhat strange parallel. Several years ago I created and performed a one man show exploring the life and work of author and Holocaust survivor, Primo Levi, who mysteriously fell to his death on April 11, (1987). April 11, the birthday of Joel Grey.
Let’s just say I was all but pre-destined to perform the works of Joel Grey. There is an emotional connection that cannot be ignored. A witty, versatile song & dance man who endears himself to audiences with his exaggerated physicality, grand gestures and whimsical boyish charm…he knows how to connect with the audience and bring them along on his journey and that is precisely the legacy I hope to leave behind as well.
And so... I say... or should I perhaps sing.... ."Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!"... to Shades of Grey!

Alexandra Matiss Marinaccio began painting in the Russian style after retiring from teaching in 2000. Inspired by Russian lacquer painting, she paints with acrylic enamels on black backgrounds, adding gold leaf and touches of metallics. Folktales that are part of her Russian heritage motivated her to begin a series of illustrative paintings based on stories such as "The Firebird" and "Ruslan and Ludmilla." Her paintings have been on display in The Art Alcove of the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport, the Gotham Gallery in Manhattan, and the Art-trium Gallery in Melville. PRIVATE VIEWING OF THE ARTWORK AND HOME OF HUMBERTO PILOTO
This special event was held on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in Bellmore, NY.
Click the "more" button to the right for Humberto Piloto's biography.
HUMBERTO PILOTO
..." I almost made it on my raft to the American coast, when I was picked up by the Navy and taken to the Guantanamo Bay Base"... It is at Guantanamo Bay that the rest of the world begins to see the paintings of Humberto Piloto, who tried to flee Cuba on a boat that he and four other friends had made.
Once in Guantanamo Bay, the paintings were greatly admired by the personnel there, and "it was the military people on the base that would provide the paint, brushes and canvases for me so that I could paint. The creative level going on in Guantanamo Bay is something that the world should know about, and it was at the base where I further reflected on my future."
Humberto Piloto received his formal training at a local art school in La Habana, Cuba. There he received most of his training in different techniques of the Plastic Arts. A graduate of the Polytechnic Institute for Industrial Design in Cuba, Mr. Piloto's paintings have been in display at diverse art galleries in Panama, Cuba and in the New York State area. He has continued painting since his arrival in the United States in 1994, and hopes to continue to study art. Mr. Piloto's goal is to one day own an art gallery where he can present the works of other artists who like to express their thoughts and feelings and communicate them to the public.
