The purpose of High 5 is to develop young audiences by making the arts affordable and accessible to students. The High 5 program enables students in middle school, high school, or college between the ages of 13 and 19 to purchase tickets for any High 5 event for only $5 each, unless otherwise noted.
High 5 Tickets to the Arts was chartered as an independent, non-profit organization in New York City in 1995. The original idea, conceived by a Styvesant High School junior, was modeled after a student ticket program in Europe. The program has been highly successful in New York City, where thousands of students have taken advantage of the discounted tickets. High 5 Long Island, a national affiliate of the New York City program, is a program of the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport.
1. Obtain a High 5 Long Island ID card
Complete the application form. Send a copy of your school ID, drivers license, passport, a letter from a teacher, or anything else showing that you are between the ages of 13 and 19. A $5 processing fee is charged for the issuance of a new id card, which expires on your 20th birthday. There is an additional $5 fee for any replacement cards ...
2. Make your selections
Look through this catalog and choose the shows you want to see and/or the museums you want to visit.
3. Buy your tickets
High 5 ticket privileges and ticketing procedures vary according to the policies of the individual institutions. They range from one High 5 ticket to up to four tickets per event for only $5 each. Some events are free or less than $5, so read the catalog carefully. Advance purchase is permitted at some, but not all venues. Tickets for Tilles Center performances may only be purchased on the same day as the performance, no earlier than 2 hours prior to the event. If you are interested in a particular event, call the phone number listed next to the event to make sure High 5 tickets are still available. Then take your High 5 ID card and money to the theater or museum box office. Tickets may ONLY be purchased directly through the venue’s box office or through the Arts Council office.
4. Confirm the date
Events are always subject to change and/or cancellation, so call the box office the day of the event to confirm the date and time.
5. Have a great time.
Please note: High 5 is a privilege, a special ticket discount to introduce teen students to the arts. It is subject to the policies of the individual institutions and may not include every ticket-buying convenience (for example, as at Tilles Center, it covers only same day, in-person sales.) Tickets must be purchased by the High 5 member with a card and not by parents or anyone else not a member. Tickets may only be used by the teen High 5 member and those accompanying him or her to the event.
High 5 Long Island has received a generous grant from Target which will enable us to increase our services to teens and bring back the popular Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) program. Each year the Target Foundation and Target Stores give 5% of the corporation’s income back to the community, an average of over $3,000,000 every week! Target grants support education, arts and culture, and other programs that strengthen communities. Many thanks to Target for its generous backing of High 5 Long Island.
The Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) program is back by popular demand. TRaC is a unique opportunity for High School students interested in journalism and/or the arts to develop critical writing skills and a deeper understanding of different artistic disciplines. During a typical TRaC series, students meet fellow teen writers from all over Long Island and participate in an interactive writing seminar, attend a performance together, write a critical review of the performance with the e-mail guidance of the instructor, and meet again for discussion and feedback on their work. Select works are published on the Arts Council website, catalog, and in local papers. Under consideration for the TRaC series this season are a collaborative ballet/opera/rock performance by Parsons Dance and the East Village Opera Company and a performance of the musical Hairspray, both taking place at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. A nominal fee includes tickets to the performance and a pre-performance event, two writing workshops, and e-mail guidance by our instructors. What type of events can High 5ers expect to experience this year? Thanks to the generosity of our participating venues, High 5 teens can purchase $5 tickets to a host of different performances and events. The Arts Council’s website lists the full season calendar (click on High 5 Long Island followed by Calendar of Events). High 5ers can choose from a wide variety of performances ranging from Avenue Q to Bill Cosby and from Itzak Perlman to Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance, offered by Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. At Staller Center for the Arts, located at Stony Brook University, the choice ranges from jazz artist Christian McBride to the hip hop dance group Groovaloo and from the Martha Graham Dance Company to Emerson String Quartet. A live performance of Steel Magnolias will take place at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center. The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Co will perform The Pirates of Penzance. Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center is featuring a Korean Horror Film series and an Arab American Comedy Night. Live performances of My Fair Lady and High School Musical are at The Stage Theatre in Merrick. The Freeport Concert Association invites all to see the Amstel Quartet from Holland and L.I.U.’s Post Theatre Company is doing Improv and a New Play Festival. The Nassau County Museum of Art has an exhibit of Norman Rockwell’s works, and on Sundays there are special activities included with the museum admission. The Heckscher Museum of Art is offering music and art at their Gallery Recital Series.
And we’re just getting started!
For the past eight years High 5 Long Island has been making the arts affordable and accessible to students. Perhaps your child or someone you know has been a beneficiary of the program. Our participating organizations enable the teens to experience high-caliber programs for $5 per ticket. We are responsible for encouraging the participation of arts organizations and serving as a liaison to the teen members. As a not-for-profit organization, the Arts Council relies on contributions for its existence. Please help by sending a donation to: LIAC Freeport, High 5 Long Island, 130 E.
